A KEY INGREDIENT: ACETYL-L-CARNITINE

If you listen to the hype, Acetyl-L-Carnitine could be perceived as another wonder ingredient with more ‘may helps’ than you can count on one hand. At Core Focus, our aim is to breakdown our ingredients so that you know exactly why they’re in our product.

The basics:

So, let’s start with what we know: Acetyl-L-Carnitine, or ALC, is an amino acid (a building block for proteins) that is naturally produced in the body. It helps the body produce energy. It is important for heart and brain function, muscle movement and many other body processes.

Carnitines shuttle certain fatty acids to mitochondria (the powerhouses inside muscle cells) to be burned as fuel. The carnitines work in several interrelated ways. They are influential in cardiac health, metabolism and neurological health. We’re going to focus on Acetyl-L-Carnitine since that is the carnitine linked to mental functioning and an ingredient key to Core Focus.

Acetyl-L-Carnitine’s role in energy production:

ALC is involved in the breakdown and conversion of fats (lipids) into a source of energy.  The nervous system requires certain fats to optimise neurotransmission and brain functioning, which is why ALC is an important substance in cognition and other brain processes.

What about the brain?

ALC, obvious by its identity, contains an acetyl group, which is essential for optimising neurotransmission (sending messages and signals around the body). The myelin sheath coats each nerve cell (and is primarily made up of fat). The chemical composition of the myelin sheath allows impulses to jump across synapses (the gaps between nerve cells) and travel through the body to turn into actions, sensations and feelings. Due to the way ALC aids fat metabolism, Researchers believe ALC shows promise as a treatment for certain nervous and cognitive disorders.

ALC is also important in maintaining normal levels of acetyl groups for the production of Acetylcholine and other acetylated neurotransmitters which are crucial for normal brain and nerve function. Heightened Acetylcholine has been linked to memory, focus and mental agility.

ALC is a key building block in aid of cognitive functioning and is, therefore, a key ingredient in Core Focus®.
